Marseille Things To Do
When visiting France, it is imperative that you make a stop in the city of Marseille. Located on the southern coast of France, it is an ideal location for vacationers that want to experience all that the French culture has to offer, but want to spend a little time at the beach too. The following are some of the most important attractions in the city of Marseille.
Palais de Longchamp
Don’t be confused. It’s not actually a palace. The Palais de Longchamp is a monument that is dedicated to showing the importance of water to the people of Marseille. The main attraction is the huge amount of fountains that fill the area. Marseille was first founded by the Greeks as a shipping port. Ever since then, boating and water have been integral to the day to day activities of the people that live there. The garden is quiet, making it an ideal place to stop and rest and take a break from the jam-packed itinerary of your vacation. The Palais de Longchamp was first built in the mid-1800’s when a canal was built to connect the Durance River to downtown.
Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde
Spectacular views are your thing, then a visit to the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde is a must-visit while in Marseille. When it is clear during the daytime, you can pick out the different iconic buildings that make up the city. There is just as much to do at ground level at the Basilica, though. The first place that many people stop is the Crypt. It is split into two different halves. One half is underground in a cave in the church. It is a dimly lit, serene experience that is much different from checking out the main church area.
La Bourse
La Bourse serves a few different functions in the city of Marseille. Its primary use is as the center for the stock exchange in the city. It is even named after the mythological god of trade. The Palais de La Bourse is also the home of a very impressive maritime museum. There are sailing and steam-powered ships from the past on display as well as different nautical maps used throughout time.
