Mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam – The Essence and Pride of Karachi

The interior of the Mausoleum reflects the green of a four-tiered crystal chandelier gifted by the Peoples Republic of China and there is a large park surrounding the mausoleum. The Mazar-e-Quaid was built in honour of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, an Indian-Muslim politician and the leader of the “All India Muslim League” who went on to found Pakistan and served as its first Governor General.

The Pakistani people lovingly refer to him as “Quaid-e-Azam” (Great Leader). In the 1940’s, Jinnah suffered from tuberculosis which, along with lung cancer, led to his death on September 11, 1948.  This masterpiece of white marble was completed in the 1960’s and is located in the center of the city atop of a small hill surrounded by well-pruned & lush gardens. It’s a very calm and tranquil place amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy city.  Graves of 5 other prominent leaders of that period are also located near the mausoleum, including, the “Quaid-e-Millat”, Liaqat Ali Khan,  the first Prime Minister of Pakistan and his wife and great woman leader Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan, Quaid`s sister Miss Fatima JinnahSardar Abdur Rab Nishtar and Mr. Noorul Ameen.

The Mazar is surrounded by trees and a garden laden in Islamic art, with fountains surrounding it. Shoes must be removed prior to ascending to the top  where the tomb is located inside the Mazar. The actual grave is several meters below the marble tomb. About every 20 minutes, there is a ceremonial position shift of the honor guard and every four hours , a changing of the guard. This is a must see if you are into military formalities. Mazar-e-quaid is located in the middle of the city and boasts beautiful architecture. It is a must-see during your visit.
