Transportation in Lisbon: Metro
Lisbon, the capital of Portugal and the 11th largest metropolitan area in the European Union, is a center for government, entertainment, arts, media, education, and tourism. If you are going to visit Lisbon and plan to rely on the Metro system to get around, here are some things you should know about the metro in Lisbon.
Metro
Lisbon’s subway system is modern, clean and efficient. The metro network consists of four color-coded subway lines (blue, yellow, green and red). The subway consists of 48 stations and cover a distance of 37 km. The metro operates from 6:00 a.m. until 01:00 a.m. Tickets are available from machines at all the stations. Other tickets, which combine the use of the metro with the use of buses and trams, can be bought at the Carris kiosks.
The Little Green Card
The ticket machines will give you a little green card. The card can be purchased and reused for any number of trips. You can “recharge” it with new trips, so don’t forget to save it. At the turnstile, you put the card through a small slot to get into the subway station. On buses, trams, and trains, there are small yellow boxes near the entrance doors that you press your card against so you can get on these forms of transportation. If need to recharge your card, you will have to find one of ticket machines to do it.
