The cheapest way to reach Monreale is to take a bus from the nearby town of Palermo, which costs less than €3 round trip. There are two bus lines that will take you to Monreale. Bus number 389 departs from the Piazza Indipendenza, which is near the Normal Palace and the bus stop is on the west side of the piazza. There is also another bus that is run by Azienda Siciliana Trasporti (AST), which is considered more reliable. This bus leaves from the train station. The bus trip will take about one hour, depending on traffic between the two towns.
If you choose to rent a car and drive yourself, there is a large parking lot down the hill from the cathedral in Monreale. On off seasons, you might be lucky and find a spot at the cathedral itself, but the roads are very narrow, so it is advisable to park your car and spend your time in the city on foot.
