Gateway of India

Located on the Arabian Sea, the Gateway of India is a beautiful monument and one of the most interesting places to visit in Mumbai. Considered a must-see spot by many tourists, the Gateway to India is located at the Port of Mumbai, so ferry service to other attractions and points of interest is accessible at the same location.

The monument was built in 1911 to commemorate King George V and Queen Mary’s first visit, however it wasn’t finished and opened until 1924. The 26 meter-high arch is constructed in yellow basalt and reinforced concrete.

Taj Mahal Hotel

This expensive hotel may not be in everyone’s budget, but it is still worth checking out. Built in 1903, the Taj Mahal Hotel is widely regarded as one of the finest in the world. It’s filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. Even if you aren’t a guest, you can still visit the hotel and take a look around.  The hotel was the site of a major terrorist attack in 2008, but it has since been repaired and renovated.

Chowpatty Beach

Unlike the typical western beaches, Chowpatty Beach is more for people-watching than sunbathing or swimming.  The heavily polluted waters make swimming a definite no-no. Locals visit this beach for relaxation, not for laying in their bathing suits.  In August and September, the beach is host to Mumbai’s 10-day Ganesha Chaturthi festival.  The beach is especially spectacular at night since vendors and performers are out and about.

Elephanta Caves

The Elephanta caves are an ancient monument and shrine of the Hindu religion.  The caves are estimated to be more than 1,500 years old. The Hindu deities Shiva and his wife Parvati are carved into the rock caves throughout the temple.

Elephanta Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.  You will need to take a boat ride to the island and there is a fee to visit the caves, but the Elephanta Caves are one of the must-sees of Mumbai.

Victoria Terminus

This gothic structure was built in 1887 and was named in honor of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.  Victoria Terminus is the busiest railway station in India. The station was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 and was used as a location for the film Slumdog Millionaire, which was a huge box office hit around the world.

Sanjay Ghandi National Park

To get away from the hustle and the bustle of the streets of Mumbai, take a trip to the park. More than 270 species of birds have been recorded here, and the park is home to different species of deer, monkeys, foxes, and leopards.
