This island and its only town share the name Mykines. A remote settlement on the westernmost island of the Faroe Island archipelago, visitors come to see its unique landscape featuring rock formations known as sea stacks and cliffs that fall straight into the ocean. There is no way to drive between the islands, which makes transportation to and around Mykines an adventure in itself, the two methods being boat or helicopter.
A unique way to get to Mykines is by helicopter. It’s not nearly as expensive as you might think, because the Faroese government heavily subsidizes passenger traffic so that helicopter crews can get practice for their primary mission: search and rescue. Seating on the helicopters is limited, however, so it is important to book in advance.
The most common method of getting to this remote island is to take a ferry from the town of Sørvágur. The ferry dock in Sørvágur is accessible by bus from Tórshavn or Vágar Airport. It’s also a scenic 20-minute walk from the airport if you’re so inclined.
The Mykines harbor is a small inlet with extremely steep cliffs on all sides, so be prepared to make quite a steep uphill climb after you disembark. During peak season (May to August) ferries run twice daily, once daily the rest of the year, weather permitting. Check the ferry website for up-to-date timetables and fares, and come to the dock a few minutes early, as boats have been known to leave ahead of schedule. It is also worth noting that ferries can be delayed and even canceled because of adverse weather.
