As wonderful as Puerto Vallarta is, visitors will find it worth their while to explore some of the nearby towns. A short drive from Puerto Vallarta reveals several hidden gems if you are willing to go off the beaten path. Let’s explore some of them now:

San Sebastian

A former mining town, San Sebastian is full of charming colonial architecture, cobbled streets and a laid-back vibe. You can get there via car, public transportation or day tour.

Tepic is the capital of the state of Nayarit and full of history, good food and plenty to do. There are ruins to visit, museums to explore and beautiful churches to photograph.

Mismaloya is really where the popularity of Puerta Vallarta started. This beach town is full of hotels, restaurants and fun. It’s also where much of the film “Night of the Iguana” was shot. For a fun afternoon, check out “Chico’s Paradise.”

Another quiet escape from the bustling city, Mascota is an agricultural town not far from Puerto Vallarta.
