New Orleans Transportation
You can rent a car when traveling to New Orleans, but many people say it’s not worth it since the French Quarter and the other neighborhoods are highly walkable and parking is not only sparse, it’s expensive. There are numerous other transportation options.
Arriving in New Orleans
If arriving at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, getting to downtown New Orleans or the French Quarter couldn’t be easier. Taxis are the fastest and most convenient method; you’ll see them as you leave the baggage claim area. And the best part? It’s a fixed fee. If you prefer to pay a little less, take the RTA Bus from the airport straight into the city. Another option is to hop a shuttle bus, but these cost more than the local buses do. Plus, tourists report shuttles take a long time.
Getting Around Town
Streetcars are a popular way to get around; they’ve been running through the uptown districts of New Orleans since 1835. Just hop on and pay with the correct change; prices are listed at the station. If you don’t have the exact amount, you’ll still get change, but it will be in the form of a transfer ticket. With a day pass, you can hop on and off and make your own tour. Other methods of transport to see the sights:
- Rent a bicycle
- Ride the free ferry across the Mississippi to take in the great views from Algiers
- Take a horse and carriage tour
- Rent a van and driver
People often say walking is the best way to get around.
A Walkable City
The French Quarter is less than a mile long by about 1/2 mile wide. Some of the streets, such as Bourbon, are traffic-free at night while other streets are always reserved for pedestrians. However, it’s not recommended you walk around the French Quarter at night. Taxis are fine with taking you for short stints while you’re out on the town.
