New York State Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

New York State Things to Do

While most people who plan a trip to New York are thinking about the hustle and bustle of the city, there are plenty of other things to do throughout the great state of New York. Spend some time in the many wonderful regions and you’ll want to come back again and again.

New York City

New York City has many amazing things to do throughout the year. Those visiting for the first time may want to visit the Empire State Building, travel across the Brooklyn Bridge, or take a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Each of these destinations offers opportunities for great photographs. You can also go see the latest Broadway show, take a stroll around Central Park, or visit the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art. Don’t forget to eat a slice of New York’s famous pizza while you’re here.

Natural Wonders

Outside of the city, you’ll be surprised at the amount of natural beauty that surrounds you. In Niagara Falls, you’ll be able to see the falls. If you want to see the Canadian side, you’ll need a passport, though. Letchworth State Park and Watkins Glen both also have fantastic waterfalls and campsites. The Finger Lakes region in Western New York features quaint bed and breakfasts. Consider planning a tour of the local wineries. In the North, the Thousand Islands area offers beautiful views and fun on the lake. New York is also home to the Adirondack and Catskill mountains. Those are great destinations for those who like to ski. Autumn is a great time to visit any of the regions in New York, as the fall foliage offers breathtaking views.

Historical Hotspots

If you’re a bit of a history buff, you’ll enjoy heading out to some of the major historical areas throughout the state. Seneca Falls is a small town, but it’s the birthplace of the women’s rights movement, and you can tour the museum and learn about this piece of history there. New Yorkers were also active in the Underground Railroad. The North Star Underground Railroad Museum in Ausable Chasm offers a look into this history. In Rochester, you can tour Susan B. Anthony’s home, and learn more about the Underground Railroad in the Rochester Museum and Science Center.

Throughout the state, you’ll find fabulous festivals, especially in the summer. Syracuse is host to the Great New York State Fair, which always comes at the end of the summer. Go there to ride the rides and taste all of your favorite fair foods. The Lilac Festival is held in Rochester every spring as the flowers start to bloom. Many people travel from all over to head to the Renaissance Faire, which is held on weekends throughout the summer in Sterling.
