Newport Trolley (RIPTA), Newport – Transportation

Transportation in Newport Newport Trolley (RIPTA)

Looking for a great way to get around the Rhode Island town of Newport? Here are a few options, including the “trolley” (it’s a bus designed to look like an old trolley).

A Great Travel Option for Visitors

Whether you’re new to the city or just enjoy riding in the old-fashioned trolley cars, the Newport Trolley is a great way to see a good portion of the city. Of course, you need to know where to go and how to find the trolley as well. Drive your rental (or take a cab) to the Gateway Visitor’s Center. This is where the Trolley starts its ride. For just $2, you can ride the trolley all day and receive essentially a tour down Bellevue Avenue.

Bellevue Avenue

Of course, even though it is just $2, is it worth it? Ultimately it is up to you, but it is a nice way to just kind of establish yourself in the town and to see where many of the best sights are. You’ll come across beautifully kept mansions, the Rough Point, Cliff Walk, and several shopping areas found on the avenue. So this makes it a fantastic destination to take in.

Buying the Pass

There are a few different pass options. You can purchase the $2 fare, which is good all day. However, once you step off the trolley the pass has been “spent” and if you want to hop back on the trolley you’ll need to purchase another pass.

If you are interested in getting off the trolley at the different stops, you’ll want to purchase the $6 pass. This is a great benefit, as you can hop off at one of the shopping areas or the Cliff Walk and then climb back on when it comes around. (You can grab a trolley schedule from the Gateway Visitor’s Center, or you can take one while on the trolley.)

Day passes are available throughout the year, as the trolley runs during every season.
