TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel-review website (and SmarterTravel’s parent company) announced today that its successful smartphone app now has offline functionality. The app offers travelers on-the-go access to reviews, lists, photos, and city maps—even without Wi-Fi.
Users can now download TripAdvisor’s city content when connected to wireless or cellular networks. When that signal is lost, the app will then automatically transition to offline mode, displaying maps, photos, and up to 10 user reviews per point of interest. When the user is within cellular or Wi-Fi range once more, the app will seamlessly revert to its normal online mode. This means that fumbling with a heavy travel guidebook or paying for pricey roaming charges and hotel Wi-Fi while on the road may just become optional.
As of press time, the app features 300 city guides, and TripAdvisor says more destinations will follow. It joins TripAdvisor’s dedicated Offline City Guides (free downloadable travel guides) to offer mobile-friendly but not Internet-dependent content.
In general, we imagine that mobile apps will offer similar functionality in the future, as smartphones and tablets increasingly become must-have travel accessories; indeed, TripAdvisor revealed that more than 40 percent of its traffic is mobile, a number that’s risen steadily in recent years and continues to climb.
