What to Pack for Maine – Packing List

Maine What to Pack

A beautiful state full of outdoor activities, culture, and scenic beauty, Maine is the perfect year-round vacation spot for any nature lover. Here’s what you should pack on a Maine vacation.

Luggage

No matter where you’re headed in Maine, a backpack will get you where you need to be from the streets to the mountains. Headed for a longer period of time? Don’t forget a decently sized carry-on.

Warm Clothes and Layers

Maine’s weather tends to be mild during summer and cold in winter. In summer months, the weather gets pleasantly warm during the day, and cools off considerably during the nighttime. Come prepared with layers, including a light jacket for evenings, to feel comfortable in a range of temperatures.

During the winter, the daytime is usually chilly, with nighttime temperatures going below freezing. A warm jacket, scarf, and hat are essential Maine winter clothing accessories.

Clothes to Pack

Sturdy Shoes and Hiking or Skiing Clothing

Hiking and skiing are two of the most popular activities in Maine, so come prepared with sturdy footgear. If you’re hiking, pack a solid pair of broken-in hiking boots with a strong grip for muddy, hilly terrain, and a waterproof coat. Wear strong, cotton clothing and carry a windbreaker with a hood.

If you’re going skiing, you need a thick, lined waterproof ski jacket, ski goggles, a headband that covers your ears, and waterproof snowboots for when you’re not hitting the slopes.

Outdoor Equipment

It’s usually most cost effective to bring outdoor gear with you instead of buying it. If you plan to camp, bring your tent, stove, and other basic camping equipment. If you have alternate lodging and just plan to hike, you’ll still want a strong backpack, waterbottle, compass, and maps to find your way around. For a ski trip, plan to bring your skis, ski boots, and poles, unless you plan to rent from the slopes.

Toiletries

Visitors who plan to go hiking will want to bring some insect repellent. Otherwise, you can find toiletries and medical supplies in almost any town or city in the state.
