Jungle Trekking and Waterfalls
The interior of the island consists of mostly jungle. This is a cool thing to do on a rainy day. Hire a guide and follow them up the top of the mountain for an view of the entire area. Another worthwhile activity away from the beaches are visits to many of the surrounding waterfalls. You can take a boat to another side of the island and see them from the water. You can also walk to the Asah waterfalls. Featured in the movie South Pacific, these famous falls make the perfect place to dip your toes in on a hot day and then have a picnic. This is a good place to retreat from the heat.
Head to Coral Island
Another side trip well worth it is Coral Island. A short distance from the mainland, Coral Island is an ideal place to go snorkeling and deep water diving. You can take a public ferry or choose a private boat ride. The coral here stretches for miles from ocean to the just off the shore. Schools of brightly colored fish run in front of your eyes often followed by turtles and even sharks. This can be an all day trip, so bring provisions or buy them from the some of the small food stalls.
Hit the Beaches
There are two major beaches in Pulau Tioman. Monkey Beach gets a little more crowded, especially during the high season. Salang Beach is right in front of a resort and tends to have a smaller crowd as its is slightly out of the way. Both beaches make a relaxing place to sit on the sand and watch the sun go down.
Go Island Hopping
Part of a chain of islands, Pulau Tioman makes the perfect base from which to explore the other islands in the area. Many resorts offer a tour of the local islands. You can spend an entire day or even several days exploring the other islands in the region. Many tours offer lots of snorkeling opportunities as well as the chance to visit multiple beaches in a single time frame.
Pulau Tioman Marine Park
Pulau Tioman and eight other nearby islands have been declared marine parks from the shore, two miles off the coast. This means it’s a protected area set off from development. Come here and go swimming and snorkeling in the lovely clear waters. If you don’t have snorkeling equipment, you can rent it from the administrative center.
