Parque Tayrona Transportation
The area around Parque Tayrona showcases much of the natural beauty Colombia has to offer. You just need to know how to get around. Here are a few of the best transportation options and tips to consider while visiting.
Long Distance Bus
Probably the best way to reach Parque Tayrona is via a long distance bus. Buses come in from all major nearby cities as this is a favorite destination for both locals wanting a break and tourists (without it becoming overcrowded). The long distance bus is inexpensive, but don’t expect the most up-to-date buses. Many of these buses are on the older side (think 70’s and 80’s). You won’t have a seat that can recline or a great view out of the window, and most won’t have a bathroom or if they do, the bathroom doesn’t work. So, if you’re traveling a great distance, make sure to use the restroom both before and when the bus makes the occasional stop.
Book a Horse
There are several great hiking locations around town. These hiking locations can be challenging for those not in shape. Attempting to hike some of these locations when you’re not physically fit can result in injury. Instead, consider taking a horse. You can book a pack horse that knows the trail. With the horse, you can still take in the beautiful scenery of a hike without worrying about injuring yourself.
Boat
Some of the national park elements can only be accessed via boat. There are sunken ship remains not too far off the coast and a handful of other interesting sights. There are a few different boating options. It is best to go with an experienced service provider here and not someone renting their boat out for hire. This is because some areas around Parque Tayrona can become choppy with large rock outlets jutting out of the water (this is actually what caused most of the ship wrecks you’ll see on the tours). You’ll want someone who knows the rock outlets and the best ways around. To do this, talk to your hotel and ask about a service provider they recommend.
Transportation Inside the Park
The problem with taking a bus to the park is you’ll be dropped off at the front. To reach the park itself you’ll need to walk a full three kilometers past vegetation and parking. With the heat, it is easier to book a taxi at the front of the park to take you the rest of the way or coordinate with your hotel.
