Petra What to Pack

Petra, also known as the “Rose City”, is an archeological wonder in Jordan’s southwestern desert. If you have plans to visit this 2,300-year-old site, you’ll need to know what to pack.

No matter what you have planned for your Petra adventure, these luggage options are ideal for a short or long-term stay.

Sun Protection

The harsh desert heat and sun can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s a good idea to pack a pair of sunglasses and other other gear, such as sun block and a hat, to protect you from the hot, arid climate. Wear loose, light clothing that covers your arms and legs. You will also want to pack some water and/or sports drinks. Although these items are available at the park, they’ll be two to three times more expensive there.

Cash

There are no ATMs near Petra, and everything is paid in cash: the entrance fee to see the ruins, and anything extra such as camel rides or guided tours. If you want to buy something from the Bedouins who sell snacks and other items off the beaten path, only cash is accepted. The most widely used currency in Petra include the US dollar, euros, sterling pounds, or Jordanian dinar.

Miscellaneous Items to Pack for Petra

Pack a comfortable pair of shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking and hiking. A good camera is essential to capture the beauty of this ancient Nabatean capital. If you have the room in your backpack, pack a pair of binoculars for amazing views from Petra’s many vantage points.
