Port-Vila Transportation
At first glance, getting around the tiny island of Vanuatu seems easy — after all, it’s only twenty miles from one side of the island to the other. There’s a variety of options, however, for where you’re going and how to get there.
Airport
The Port Vila Bauerfield Airport is the only way in or out of town. It’s a very small building with only three check-in counters, so visitors should arrive early for international departures. There’s a live band that plays for every arrival, making it a particularly charming airport.
Taxis
Small cars serve as an impromptu taxi fleet with most hanging out by the pier or the airport. It’s difficult, and sometimes impossible, to hail a cab from the road. A trip from the pier or airport to town will cost about $15, while many taxis will offer to rent out their services for the full day for about $100.
Bus Routes
The buses that rumble through Port Vila are minibuses that fit only about a dozen travelers. Most are owned by the driver themselves; you can tell which are public buses by the “B” on their license plate. Many drivers are aggressive about picking up passengers and will honk to indicate they’re there. Hop in and tell the driver where you’d like to go. At about a dollar per person to ride about, it’s by far the most economical means of getting around in Port Vila, but don’t expect any help with luggage or directions.
