One of the joys many tourists get out of travel comes from the shopping experience. Shopping in Porto can be an adventure in itself, and here are some tips that may help you find the places you’re seeking.
Porto has several modern shopping centers, both within and outside the city center.
Cross the Arrabida bridge to reach the Arrabida Shopping Centre, or go to the center of town just by the end of Boavista Street to reach Shopping Centre Cidade do Porto. You can also visit Santa Catarina, a shopping center located on Santa Catarina Street.
In any of these locations, shoppers will find international items and a range of merchandise. They are open every day, usually from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. or midnight. Parking facilities, cinemas, and restaurants are connected to most of these centers, as well.
One particularly popular shopping center in Porto is Via Catarina, a mall situated in a neoclassical building in the center of the city. Here, people can find food, clothes, toys, and more. There is also a Vodaphone store downstairs where you can purchase a tourist sim card for a fair price to get internet in Portugal. Two streets over, there is a supermarket.
One feature of the Via Catarina is the availability of breakfast, dinner, or supper throughout the day while other restaurants in the city are closed. All restaurants including fast food are located on the upper floor.
For those seeking a more unique experience, there are several markets in Porto. These are often collections of stalls with vendors selling various items, mostly food and clothes.
Mercado do Bolhao is the old market in the center of Porto. This is a location for local flavor, though the street may seem a little run down compared to more flashy malls.
