Prague What to Pack
Prague is a major cosmopolitan city with all the modern conveniences mixed with historical architecture and cobblestone streets. Here are some things to pack for your visit to Prague that will make your trip more enjoyable.
Luggage
Because of the cobblestone streets, it is best to have luggage with large sturdy wheels. An empty backpack is good to carry in order to take it with you on short trips, or to use it for the things you need at hand when riding on the trains, and to fill it up with souvenirs to take home.
Rain Gear for Bad Weather
The weather in Prague is unpredictable. It can be cold, windy, and rainy, even in the summer time. For this reason, no matter what time of year you plan to visit, be sure to pack an umbrella, a raincoat, a windbreaker jacket, and a sweater.
In winter time, you will also need a heavy winter’s coat that is weatherproof because it gets very cold outside.
Clothes to Pack
Comfortable Shoes
You will probably spend a lot of time walking around. If you are not used to walking on cobblestones they can be hard on the feet unless you wear comfortable shoes. Women should avoid wearing heels as they can easily get stuck in the road. Pack some heavy athletic socks to wear in order to provide a cushion in the shoes for the feet.
It is also good to have some rain coverings for your shoes that you can put on to prevent them from getting wet when walking in rainy weather unless the shoes are already waterproof.
Get a Free City Map on Arrival
There is no need to pack a map of Prague. There are free maps of Prague at any one of the many Tourist Information Centers. The Prague map includes the locations of the main sights and shows the public transportation system (metro, tramway, and bus routes).
Prague has several Tourist Information Centers in the heart of the historical part of town as well as in both terminals at the airport.
Guidebook
Some like to carry a guidebook along with them. Others are more comfortable using the Internet to find the information about Prague they need to know after they arrive. There are plenty of cyber cafes in Prague.
Electrical Converter
Europe is on the 220v system and the U.S. is on 115v. Without a converter, you risk damaging your electrical equipment if it is not made for the European system.
Converters can be bought online for about $35. Some of the higher end hotels will have a converter (usually in the bathroom) built into the wall. Most hotels do not. It is best to be prepared by bringing one.
Be careful because a power converter is different from a power plug adapter. An adapter without a converter will most likely fry your equipment.
Electronics to Pack
Other Items
Bring an ample supply of any personal items like prescription medications, cosmetics, or toiletries that you might want or need. This is easier than trying to find them in Prague.
