The World of Anne of Green Gables in P.E.I.
Avonlea Village aims to bring the 1880’s world of Anne of Green Gables to life again. Talk to actors acting out her immoral characters. Take a buggy ride, sit in a one room schoolhouse, watch a pig race and participate in a sing-along. For yet more Anne, visit the Green Gables House. Set in Prince Edward Island National Park, the house was owned by Montgomery’s relatives and said to have inspired her works. It’s part of a larger area with beautiful gardens and films on the author’s life. You can also visit her actual birthplace. It’s a small house that has been fully preserved. If you want to see her works come to life again, book a seat for the Anne of Green Gables Musical. The musical is a three hour performance at the Confederation Centre of the Arts on Queen Street in Charlottetown.
Explore the Outdoors
Get outside in the fresh air. Take a walk along the beaches and cliffs of Prince Edward Island National Park. While one of Canada’s smallest national parks. it’s a scenic place with bike paths, a beach and public camping. For more wilderness, explore Cabot Beach Provincial Park for easy access to a beach along with some of the prettiest roads on the entire island. Cavendish Beach is the place to be all year round. In the summer, the waters are the perfect way to cool off. For more dunes head to the trails along a park called The Dunes. Located in East Cavendish, it’s filled with walking trails that can be hiked or biked. During other seasons, the beach has large wild dunes and picturesque red cliffs. When heading to other parts of Canada, stop by the Point Prim Lighthouse, the oldest brick lighthouse in Canada. You can picnic on the grounds. If you like to bike, the Confederation trail is for you. This is a 250 km railway that has been converted into a bike path. The trail stretches along the entire island from east to west. It’s doable in a single day. The path is also mostly flat so it makes the perfect place to take children. This is a great way to see the interior of the island including the countryside.
