Alaska Airlines has a history of discounting the price of frequent flyer awards on its own flights.
This is another in a long line of such deals, with a difference.
Offer Details
Through March 31, Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan members can earn (save?) 2,500 miles when redeeming miles for award flights on Delta. Award flights must be completed by February 20, 2012.
In Alaska’s program, Delta offers awards in restricted coach (25,000 miles) or first class (50,000 miles), but only on domestic flights.
Deal or No Deal
Assuming the discount is applied to a Delta award flight in restricted coach, at 25,000 miles, it amounts to a 10 percent discount.
As discounts go, that’s only mildly compelling. When discounting its own flights, Alaska has typically been much more generous—reducing 25,000-mile awards to 15,000 miles, for instance.
Still, any discount is better than no discount at all. And Delta’s domestic flight network is extensive, so the discount arguably has more value than a comparable discount on Alaska’s own flights.
