San Felipe Warnings and Dangers
San Felipe is located in Mexico near the California border. Because of its proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border, there are dangerous elements to be aware of when traveling through Baja, California.
Be Aware of Military Checkpoints
There are two checkpoints into San Felipe: one going in and one coming out. These are randomly placed along the main road, so you might get stopped just driving through town. If you are stopped at a military checkpoint, do not worry. Just be respectful and you should have no problems. Before the checkpoints, you should see signs that you are about to be stopped.
Road Conditions are Big Problem in San Felipe
You can travel to San Felipe on Highway 5 coming from Mexicali. It’s a four-lane road for the first few miles, but be prepared it turns into a two-lane road. The street is paved, but be careful as the shoulders are not adequate and there is no light at night. This can be a dangerous situation.
In order to stay safe, make sure your car is in good condition. The surrounding desert and remoteness can make rescue difficult if you get stranded. You might even drive past cars that have been abandoned by the side of the road.
Overall, if you plan to drive through San Felipe, make sure you are in a group so you are not stranded by yourself or caught at a military checkpoint. This will help you stay safe in Mexico.
