Sleepy Hollow Things to Do
Sleepy Hollow, New York, originally known as Tarrytown, is famous for being the setting of Washington Irving’s book “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” but it also has a long and rich history as a Dutch settlement. Many of the things to do in this village revolve around its Dutch history, themes related to Irving’s book, or both.
Churches and Cemeteries
Sleepy Hollow has two interesting historical churches. One of them is the Old Dutch Church which is mentioned in Irving’s novel as being the place where Ichabod Crane took refuge against the Headless Horseman. The church itself has an old world charm with beautiful woodwork and a large pipe organ inside. Its associated cemetery is connected to the more famous Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where Irving is buried. Both cemeteries contain the remains of the real-life people behind the novel as well as other important historical residents. The other well-known church, the Union Church of Pocantito Hills, has elegant stained glass windows, including one of which was created by Matisse a couple of days before he died.
Philipsburg Manor
The Philipsburg Manor is an actual working traditional, 17th century Anglo-Dutch farm. The main manor is over 300 years old and everything on the farm is kept the way it was during that time period. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the work, though just for fun. Kids can pet and feed the animals and help put down bedding or round them up. During the Halloween season, the manor puts a big event which is quite popular and crowded. This event includes people dressed up in characters and candlelit lanterns lining the pathways.
