Sliema is a city located on the northeast shore of Malta and is a center of shopping, dining and tourism. Transportation to and from Sliema is relatively easy due to Sliema’s size.
The primary airport in Malta is located only seven kilometers from Sliema and it is typically referred to as Luqa Airport. Even though Malta is a small island, the airport is busy and services international flights on a regular basis. A quick bus ride will take you to and from Sliema and the airport, but it will probably make a few stops along the way. You can also take a taxi to and from the airport. Taxi rates in Malta are regulated so you know ahead of time what the rate will be, but the downside is that taxis are not as prevalent around Sliema or the airport as they are in other tourist areas. Regardless of your mode of transportation, give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport so you don’t miss your flight.
Hop-on, Hop-off Buses
Hop-on, hop-off busses are alternatives to the local bus line and offer two tour routes passengers can take at their leisure. Tourists can choose the North Tour or the South Tour for a small fee, ride the double-decker bus and tour Sliema and its surrounding areas for around 15 Euros. Be prepared that the lower level of the bus may be warm, while the top level of the bus may be windy. The busses run regularly at 30-minute intervals.
Ferry and Harbor Cruises
The ferry runs from Sliema to nearby Valletta at 30-minute intervals and is an inexpensive and scenic way to travel between the two cities. The ferry service is offered seven days per week but may close during inclement weather. Harbor cruises are a great way to tour the area and your guide can give you interesting historical facts about the sites you see. There are a few companies which offer harbor cruises, with the most notable being Captain Morgan.
