Southern California heats up in April

For a warm-weather getaway after the spring break madness and before the summer vacation season, Southern California can’t be beat. We’ve chosen this corner of the country as our top April destination for its combination of comfortable temperatures, abundant spring activities, and competitive prices.

According to the Travel Planner’s Weather Guide, April is a good time to be in the Los Angeles area, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to 70s, and average rainfall of only 1.3 inches. April may be even nicer down the coast. Robert Arends, National Public Relations Manager for San Diego’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, says visitors can expect “pleasantly warm beach weather” during this month.

What to do

In addition to the general bloom, flower fans have a pair of other reasons to visit the San Diego area in April. Through May 8, Carlsbad hosts the Flower Fields, 50 acres of hillside paths laden with “wide bands of bright orange, yellow, and red blossoms.” For something more traditional, the Coronado Flower Show Weekend will be held on April 16 and 17.

In the L.A. area, visit Monterey Park for the Cherry Blossom Festival on April 16 and 17. A celebration of Japanese culture, the festival includes martial arts performances, taiko drummers, and of course, sushi. Admission is free.

A week later, rub shoulders with the West Coast’s well-read at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. This event is held on the UCLA campus over the weekend of April 23 and 24. Admission is free, but advance reservations are necessary for indoor events due to limited seating.

How to save

Not only is there plenty to do in the pleasant climate of Southern California in April, but this month is easier on the wallet, too. According to Arends of the San Diego CVB, “April is an ideal time to visit San Diego. Hotel availability is better and rates are more affordable than the summer peak season. And visitors typically won’t experience long lines or crowds at the major attractions.” Arends points to his organization’s list of discounts on shopping, dining, and attractions.
