Southwest announced three new nonstop routes from Denver, beginning January 10. The airline will fly two daily nonstops to Boston’s Logan Airport and one each to Spokane and Reno. No fares have been announced.
Southwest’s move is interesting for two reasons. One, it continues the quick and somewhat surprising expansion of service to and from Boston, where Southwest debuted last month with two nonstop routes. Since then, Southwest has doubled its nonstop routes from Logan, adding service to St. Louis and now Denver.
Expanding in Denver is also likely a competitive nudge at Frontier Airlines and Republic Airways, following Southwest’s failed bid to acquire Frontier. Denver is Frontier’s hub, and it is very popular there. Southwest has grown rapidly at Denver since its arrival in 2006, but the timing of this announcement comes conspicuously close to the Frontier sale.
