Split Things to Do
Split, Croatia is a town located on Dalmation Coast. This town is well-known among tourists for its beautiful beaches and Diocletian’s Palace, which is a complex that looks like a fortress. There are numerous hotels, bars, shops, cafes, and homes in Split. If you’re going to visit Split, here are a few attractions and must-see sites that you should plan to see.
Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace was built on two different levels. The lower level of the palace was constructed below sea level while the higher level was where the Emperor and guards lived. The palace is very large and most of the walls are intact. However, over the years, Diocletian’s Palace has been remodeled. If you choose to tour Diocletian’s Palace, you will start at the lower level. Throughout the tour, you will encounter many tourist shops. There are also plenty of nearby restaurants and shops.
Many would describe the upper level of Diocletian’s Palace as “a fabulous mess.” In fact, an entire town has grown in the upper level. There are still some original remains. There are many crowds, shops, and bars that you will encounter.
Lungs Of Split
Marjan Hill is located near Diocletian’s Palace and the Old Town Split. This peninsula is covered heavily in Mediterranean pine forest. Since Diocletian’s time, the area has been used as a recreation site and park. Many tourists and locals go to Marjan Hill to take short walks from the Riva promenade. Not only are there many giant aloe plants growing in Marjan Hill, but there are also many pine trees. There is also a small church in Marjan Hill that is dedicated to St. Nicholas. You will see a large Croatian flag flying. You will be able to get away from the huge crowds in Split and see breath-taking views of the city and sea.
Grgur Ninski Statue
There is a huge statue of Grgur Ninski that stands near the northern walls of the palace. Grgur Ninski, also referred to as Gregory of Nin, was a Croation bishop of medieval times who was against the Pope and made the Croatian language standard for religious services. You will find this statue in front of the Bronze Gate. Before, most of the population was unable to understand the religious services because they were only held in Latin.
Ivan Mestrovic, who is considered the best and most famous Croatian sculptor, created the statue. Originally, the sculpture was placed in Peristyle. However, the statue was moved outside the city during WW II.
Bacvice
Split is home to many beautiful beaches. Bacvice is the only central beach in Split. You can go to this beach to splash in the shallow waters or to play Picigin, which is an ancient tradition from many centuries ago. This game involves ensuring that a small rubber ball remains in the air.
