Date of Trip: April 2007
We decided to travel by car to Memphis to get away from the cold weather. The weather was perfect.
Where to Stay
For our whole trip, we were originally going to stay near the airport, but to our surprise, learned that this was NOT in a good area at all. It was very unsafe; the hotel property was fenced in with security gates. This was a fairly new property, very clean inside, and the hotel staff seemed helpful and friendly.
We ended up staying at the Springhill Suites in downtown Memphis. Not a bad location. After our first night (and being gone all during the day), the staff didn’t treat us like we were important enough guests. They didn’t make the beds up for the next night, give us new towels,or empty the trash. We were actually paying $56 more per night to stay there versus the airport. Even after speaking with the housekeeping manager and front desk about our disappointment, nothing was done.
Fun in Memphis
We went on the excellent Duck Tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and humorous, and the vehicle was based on the famous WWII DUKW amphibious design. The tour highlighted various structures and museums, and gavea history of the city.
OF COURSE, we visited Graceland (our first time) and would probably go back again. There is just so much to see there. It really gives you an idea of how much Elvis accomplished in such a short lifetime.
Other than the panhandlers (we were approached every time we went out), we did enjoy Memphis and its culture.
