Transportation to and within this gorgeous town in India is varied but reliable. To get there, choices range from a 13-hour road trip from Jammu Tawi to a two-hour flight from New Delhi with a view of the Himalayas nearly the entire way.
Getting to Srinagar by Air
It doesn’t take more than two hours to fly from New Delhi to Srinagar, a city in the Kashmir and Jammu state of India. The flight offers fantastic views of the Himalayas and the Pir Panjal range. If you’re interested in looking at the view, make sure to sit on the right side of the plane. However, you won’t be allowed to take a camera on board with you. Security is very tight on these flights, and the airport in Srinagar is located within a military base. While the soldiers are friendly, you must be willing to endure two or three security checkpoints per flight, including claiming all the luggage you want to be checked in; if you don’t claim it, it doesn’t get loaded on the plane.
Getting to Srinagar by Road
The most preferred method of travel to Srinagar is by plane because taking a bus or taxi from New Delhi not only takes upwards of 13 hours, it’s a narrow and winding mountain road. There are frequent traffic jams, often in known avalanche zones. The military maintains this road, so it is clean and well-kept; when there are accidents, soldiers are the ones on the scene.
Travel in Srinagar
Once inside Srinagar, there are taxis, government-run buses, auto-rickshaws, and private buses, among other options. The best choice for quick trips in the city is a rickshaw, while private buses are best for day trips to nearby attractions or for journeys across the city.
