Stavanger Things to Do
Stavanger is a city and municipality in Norway that is bordered by the sea along its western and northeastern borders. Fjords run along its eastern edge, and the peaceful waterside views have become a popular draw for tourists looking for things to do in Stavanger.
Stavanger’s coastal location has led to the creation of the Blue Promenade. Running from Badedammen—an outdoor swimming spot—to the Stavanger Konserthus, the promenade winds its way around the harbor and passes many of the city’s most popular tourist spots. City beaches are spread along the fjords. Three prominent beaches include Rosenli, Godalen, and Vaulen. The beach at Valuen is a bit larger than the Rosenli and Godalen ones, and each of these beaches can be visited by bus. Boat cruises are also available along the fjords. These cruise tours make the perfect way for visiting such sights as Puplit Rock and Lysefjord Bridge,
Stavanger is home to many statues and monuments that make for ideal picture-taking moments. These statues depict battles and important moments from history. A notable statue includes Gazelle by the Lake, which is engraved with the words, “Dedicated to the Men and Women of Norwegian Blood who have contributed to the Building of America.” There are also three, enormous bronze swords that stand as monuments to the battle of Hafrsfjord, which occurred in the year 872 and united Norway into a single kingdom.
Stavanger also boasts numerous beautiful buildings whose history dates back centuries. The Valberg Tower rises upon a hill on the Skagenkaien side of the harbor and makes a beautiful backdrop to the colorful Wharf Houses below it. Stavanger Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is the only medieval church in Norway to have retained its original style. Old Stavanger is the historic center of Stavanger and includes artisan workshops as well as the Norwegian Canning Museum. This part of the city is said to contain 173 white cottages dating back to the 19th century.
