Gone with the Wind

Stockholm is situated on fourteen islands between the Baltic Sea and Lake Malaren. No matter the season, every time you cross a bridge a cold wind will hit you. In summer, bring a light windbreaker. Always dress in layers as the weather is unpredictable. In winter, wear scarves, gloves, hats…basically all the warm clothes you have! It still might not be enough!

Don’t Slip and Slide

Stockholm is a great city to explore on foot, but you’ll enjoy it best with the right footwear. Its streets are icy much of the year. Wear shoes with sufficient grip to navigate slippery, slushy conditions. Leave your high heels at home as the streets are cobblestoned. These streets are charming…if you’re not wearing high heels! If you plan on having a drink at the Ice Bar, wear covered shoes. Although they do give you a big jacket & gloves to wear, it is still cold in there.

Low Light Photo Ops

In December, there are only six hours of daylight in Stockholm. Freezing temps are the norm. Don’t let that stop you from taking great pictures! Bring a camera that works well without much light and at low temperatures. Quick lenses help. Cold temps drain batteries so bring extra. The lights reflecting off the water at night are stunning! Bring the right equipment to capture them.

Modern But Different

Sweden is a modern country and all the toiletries you are looking for will be readily available…at Euro prices. Keep in mind that if you don’t read Swedish, you might not have success buying something as simple as cold medicine. Luckily most folks speak English. Expect everything to cost more than it would at home. All prescription medications should be brought with you as getting an appointment to see a doctor will take weeks. If you are planning on using American appliances you will need both a voltage converter and a plug adapter. See if your hotel provides a hairdryer and save the cash. Stockholm is expensive…you’ll need it!
