The second largest city in Indonesia, Surabaya is well served by trains, buses, as well as a busy international airport.
Juanda International Airport lies about 30 km outside the center of town. This is a huge hub for regional transport to Indonesia and many other Asian cities. You’ll find frequent direct flights to cities such as Tokyo, Beijing and Singapore as well as other parts of Indonesia including the further out islands. If you’re headed here from places like Europe and the Americas, you might have to make a connecting flight or two. A bus line goes directly from the airport to the citty, which is cheap and has room for your luggage overhead The train station is located in the downtown area so you will need to hire a taxi or take a bus if you want to catch a connecting train to any other Indonesian city.
Trains to and Around Surabaya
Trains are a wonderful way to travel in Indonesia and a great opportunity to get a look at the local countryside of rice paddies and lovely waterways, rather than the crowded highways. There are two main railway stations in the city: Surabaya Pasar Turi and Surabaya Gubeng. Gubeng is the biggest train station in the city. This is where you can catch trains headed to the south or the east. For the trains heading to the north or the west, you’ll need to go to Pasar Turi.
Purabaya Station is located at Bungurasih village. This the main bus station if you are planning to take a bus from Surabaya to other parts of Indonesia. It’s an easy trip from the train station. This is the also the starting point for many bus routes in the city. Look for Line 1 for the areas to the west of the city such as Solo and Yogya. For areas to the east, head for Line 2. This is where you pick up buses for places such as Malang.
