Transportation in Bangkok: Taxis
Arriving in Bangkok, especially for the first time, may feel completely overwhelming. Just trying to get to your hotel may seem impossible amidst the hustle and bustle. When it comes to going between the airport and hotel and the many tourist destinations in the city, the best way to travel is taxi.
You have a couple other options, such as public transportation and Tuk-Tuk, but taxis are the safest, most convenient way to go. Tuk-tuk fares vary wildly, and they don’t have meters. And, you’ll find that there is a greater possibility of being scammed. Taxis are more regulated.
What to Know about Bangkok Taxis
First, you will note that most of them are either pink or orange and sometimes yellow and green. They are clearly marked and tend to be found in the same spots. You’ll find them all along major roads, near hotels and tourist attractions.
Always Use the Meter
For the most part, using the meter is your best bet, because it is regulated and you can’t be asked for more than what the meter says. Your driver may try to talk you into not using the meter, claiming a better deal that way, but you should politely refuse. If they are insistent, take a different taxi. If you feel uncertain about one taxi, go with another one.
Don’t Make Assumptions
Don’t assume your taxi driver will know how to get to your destination. While they will know how to get to major hotels and tourist attractions, they won’t necessarily know the way to smaller hotels or restaurants, etc.
You can show it to them on maps or GPS, but this also isn’t a guarantee. Your best bet is to have someone write the name, address, and directions in Thai for you to give to your driver. You can also have the front desk at your hotel talk to your driver as well.
Overall, taking a taxi in Bangkok is easy to do, safe, and inexpensive. Just be sure to exercise good judgment.
