Things To Do in Engelberg, Switzerland

Engelberg Things To Do

There is really wonderful mountain scenery around Engelberg, and you will need a lot more than two to three days to explore all of the most interesting places. Here are a few places to start.

The giant church of the Benedictine monastery is worth a visit, and it offers free entry for visitors during the day. The baroque interior showcases wonderful paintings and ceiling, along with ornate chandeliers. The organ of this church is the biggest organ in Switzerland, with 137 pitches.

Haerzlisee is a small alpine lake and from above it really looks like a heart (Haerzli = “small heart” in swiss german). There is a small river and various tiny waterfalls that actually feed the waters of this lake, but as it also is quite flat so it is not extremely cold. Maybe too cold to swim, but not too cold to walk through.

While you’re there, try out the Kitzelpfad. “Kitzeln” means “to tickle” and that’s what will happen to the soles of your feet when you walk barefoot over this artificial path along and partly through the lake.

Trübsee is a beautiful place to stop and enjoy the mountain views. There are a number of walking paths to wander around, examine the flowers and forget your troubles for awhile. You can also bike to and around Trübsee. Remain on the walking or biking paths to avoid damaging the flowers and landscape.

Mt. Titlis

The ride to the peak of the glacier near Lucerne has an unusual feature. When taking the aerial cable car to the summit, the gondolas start revolving on the 600-meter-long segment beginning in Stand and ending at the mountain station Klein Titlis, located at 3,020 meters above sea level.
