Evian-les-Bains Things to Do
Evian is charming, especially on market day. There’s a walk along the lakeside with conveniently placed benches where you can sit with a sandwich or an ice cream and watch the antics of the ducks and swans on the lake.
Instead of paying for overpriced Evian water in bottles, simply go to the public fountain in Evian, with water direct from the spring. You can fill your bottles with spring water directly from the source, located just a block off the main street in town behind the Evian offices.
If you like lovely architecture, then you must have a look at the Hotel De Ville, which is also known as Villa Lumiere. The former summer residence of the Lumiere family, this gorgeous villa was built in the Renaissance-inspired French classical style and became the Evian town hall in 1927. It belonged to Antoine Lumiere, whose sons Louis and Auguste invented the cinematograph. Their work can be seen in the Museum of Lumiere at Lyon.
The Centre Nautique is at the western end of town alongside the lake. For a few euros you can spend the whole day. There’s an olympic size pool, a smaller pool, a fenced-off infant pool and a waterslide with plunge pool. You can also waterski from the jetty and swim and dive safely in the lake. There’s a large cafe with terraced gardens and an outdoor coffee shop. Tight swimming trunks must be worn by men, not the loose type – they will not let you swim otherwise.
For a perfect end to the day, watch the sun set over the marina from the restaurant Cabestan, which has a large outdoor seating area. The staff are very friendly and people watching is always fun – roller bladers, dog walkers, lovers, etc.Try the Americano cocktail as an aperatif.
Beautifully situated at the border of Lake Geneva, this is the place to be for gambling, concerts and entertainment.
