Things to Do in Honfleur, France

Honfleur Things to Do

This beautiful, old harbor town, known as Honfleur is a must see in Normandy. Home to tasty restaurants, the spots lining the harbor are an ideal place for a romantic evening. While there, you can take this opportunity to see the massive Normandy Bridge which spans the Seine river.

Musee Boudin

As the name suggests, this museum is primarily concerned with the work of Boudin, an artist who was very much an Impressionist before the Impressionists arrived, and is most likely best known as Monet’s tutor. The museum collection also includes other French art, and there is an informative audio-guide for those looking for some additional information. If you find you really like Boudin, and it’s easily done, then there’s actually a bigger collection of his work at the Musee Malraux in Le Havre. This museum, while on the small side, has many important works of both French and European artists.

Pont du Normandie

You have to admire a bridge that will accommodate four lanes of heavy traffic and two pedestrian lanes, but looks like a lovely, upside down, translucent insect. The design of the bridge is called cable-stayed and when built the Pont du Normandie was the longest one of these in the world (the record has since been surpassed at least a couple of times). Even if you are not heading from Honfleur to Le Havre, Rouen or Paris it is worth the short drive just to see it. It is beautiful but also very functional in that it significantly shortens the distance from Honfleur to Le Havre while resisting high winds, allowing fairly tall craft passage underneath and its piers are designed to rest easily in the soft river bed.

Church of St. Catherine

The church is constructed of wood on a stone foundation. It was built as an act of devotion by the local craftsmen, who were mainly wooden shipbuilders, using their established technics of the 15th century. It has astounding and unusual double naves with inverted sheep-keel roofing, which is a highly unique architectural feature. This church also has lean-to aisles and ornately decorated internal panels and galleries ; there is also an interesting organ loft at the west end of the church.
