Explore on Foot

People come to Lamma for the walking experience. If you go on a Sunday or holiday, you are likely see lots of locals. The walk between Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan is an easy one, taking two hours or less at a leisurely pace. The paved path is great for families and is very stroller-friendly.

The main beach is about 20 minutes’ walk, and it’s quiet during the week. If you walk along the small jetty beside the Lamcombe Restaurant, you get an unusual view of Yung Shue Wan and the ferry pier. There are colorful boats tied up along the jetty and you can watch the locals (men, egrets, and herons) coming in with their fishing catch.

The walk between the Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan is a bit steep in some places at the start, but it offers nice views of the island and the prospect of a great seafood meal at the end.

Where to Eat

After arriving on the island, you should stop at one of the small stands selling fresh seafood and try the fish balls. The little balls of fresh fish meat are a tasty treat. There are many restaurants along the Main Street-just a few minutes’ walk from the ferry pier. If you come in the morning, have dim sum at the Sampan. Or try the Lancombe for fresh seafood. If you want good organic vegetarian food, try out the salads or breakfasts at the Bookworm Cafe.  Plan to eat at the beginning of the sightseeing trail at Yung Shue Wan and again at the end at Sok Kwu Wan after you have hiked through Lamma.

What to See

O Tsai Fishing Village

When you get off the ferry at Yung Shue Wan, look to the left and you’ll see O Tsai Fishing Village and a small pavilion that offers spectacular views of Lantau and Cheung Chau on a clear day. It’s great to sit and watch the sunset from there.

Tin Hau Temple

The Tin Hau temple is near the pier in Sok Kwu Wan village, near the restaurants. The temple dates back to 1826; in 2004 it was restored after a fire.

If you enjoyed Lamma Island you may also be interested in checking out Cheung Chau Island. Compared to Lamma, it is a more local atmosphere with a stronger Chinese identity.

It’s a good idea to start your day on Lamma early. Be sure to bring your sunscreen; even in November the sun can be intense. There are no cars or high-rises on the island, it’s a contrast to Hong Kong. Do watch out for the village vehicles, island ambulances and fire cars, though.
