Lindau Things to Do
Technically an island within Lake Constance, Lindau is home to many popular tourist attractions. Rich in history, we have compiled a short list of must see attractions while visiting Lindau, Germany.
The Stadt Theatre
First established in the 13th century as a church, this building has transformed into the Stadt Theatre. It is the largest theater on Lake Constance, and also the first dedicated theater in Germany following World War II. The theater officially opened its doors in 1951 with a performance by the Bavarian State Opera. Today, visitors to the theater can enjoy an array of performances including cabaret, concerts, special events, and the Lindau Marionette Opera.
Church of St. Stephen
Built in 1180, the Church of St. Stephen is in the market square section of Lindau. Dedicated as a Lutheran Church, the building is very sparsely decorated, especially when compared to the ornate catholic Cathedral of Our Lady positioned adjacent to St. Stephen. Despite the sparse appearance, the church is beautiful in its simplicity. Natural light pours into the church through modern stained glass windows. The church underwent a major renovation in the 1780s to reflect the Rococo style architecture seen today.
Walk along the medieval cobblestone street through Lindau and take in the history that surrounds you. Closed to vehicles, the street is open to pedestrian traffic only. The streets are lined with historic buildings, many dating back to 1358. At one time, the noble families filled the ornate homes along Maximilian Street. Once home to the important guilds and trade centers, many of the side streets to Maximilian Street still have the guild names. There are many shops and stores lining the streets that visitors can pop into for great shopping.
