Madikeri Things to Do
Madikeri is a popular destination for tourists visiting the Kodagu district and was named after the Haleri King who ruled the land from 1633 – 1687. If you’re planning a trip to Madikeri, here are some of the things you should do and see.
Raja’s Seat
Raja’s Seat is a small pavilion with a garden surrounding it; offering a view of the green valley below. The spectacular sunsets and the far-stretching Blue Mountains will take one’s breath away.
Raja’s Tombs
The tombs of Virarajendra and Lingarajendra (the last two kings of the Haleri Dynasty) at Madikeri are two of the important monuments north of Madikeri. Visiting the royal tombs on the small hill provides a spectacular view of the Madikeri. There are also the tombs of a Raja’s priest and two army commanders. A commemorative plaque, eulogizing the bravery of General Biddanda Bopu who fought Tipu Sultan has been recorded by Dodda Veerarajendra in an inscription. The tombs are in the style of Muhammadan edifices with domes in the center and turrets at the angles.
Madikeri Fort
A symbol of explicit architectural splendor and archaeological worth, the Madikeri Fort is a must-visit, especially for those who have a fascination for historical monuments and locations. The original fort was built of mud in the late 1700’s but was later rebuilt with brick and mortar. In the northeast corner at the entrance are two life-size masonry elephants and at the southeast corner is a church. The centuries old Madikeri Fort with its stone ramparts now houses the prison, a temple, a chapel, a small museum, and assorted government offices.
Omkareshwara Temple
Made with a mixture of Islamic and Gothic-style architecture, the Omkareshwara temple was built by Lingarajendra in 1820 to placate his guilt after he killed an honest and pious man to fulfill his political ambitions. The temple is located just 1 km away from the heart of the Madikeri and you can get to it by following a footpath from town.
Abbey Falls
Abbey Falls, also called as Abbi Falls, is about 1km from Madikeri and is located between coffee plantations with coffee bushes and spice estates with dense bushes and green trees where the Kaveri River cascades down a rock face. The roar of the falls can be heard from the road during the monsoon season from May to August. A hanging bridge has been built across the gorge that offers a good view of the falls.
