Miri Things To Do
Miri is a city on the northeastern coast of Sarawak, Malaysia. Located on the island of Borneo, tourists can lounge on beautiful beaches, explore nearby caves, fish for tilapia, and visit ancient temples.
Public beaches aren’t hard to find in Miri. Resorts, hotels, and shops line the coast. Even if you’re not staying near the ocean, take some time out to walk the beaches and take in breathtaking views of the sea.
If you’re up for an adventure, take a day to explore Miri’s caves. Deer Cave is among the most popular and is said to be one of the longest natural passages in the world. Deer Cave is also home to millions of bats of several different species. Tourists can watch thousands of bats leave the cave each night. Ask the locals or your travel agent for bridges and other locations around the city where the bats can be seen.
Fishing guides are found throughout Miri. While expensive, tourists can pay local fisherman to take them out to fish. Another option, especially for young kids, is the Treetops Lodge. Here, you can try your luck in a well-stocked tilapia pond. The experience is relatively inexpensive and children of all ages should be able to participate.
Miri, like much of Malaysia, is known worldwide for its temples. The colorful, religious structures stand in stark contrast to the lush, green forest that surrounds the city. Tua Pek Kong, built in 1913 in the Old Town area of Miri, is the oldest temple in the city. Tourists from around the world come to Tua Pek Kong and the other temples to worship. If you chose to visit on of these holy sites, be respectful. Keep the pictures to a minimum and abide by the local customs when you enter the shrines. Miri’s temples offer a glimpse into Sarawak’s past, and they also serve as a meeting point between the modern city and the jungle.
