Peschiera del Garda Things to Do
Peschiera is a good home base for those wanting to explore the wider region of Lake Garda and Veneto, but the town itself has much to offer as well.
Theme Parks
There are theme parks to the northeast following the shores of Lake Garda. All are great for families on holiday. In Peschiera, you can hop a free bus ride over to Gardaland, which is full of activities and restaurants. From there, the Sea Life aquarium is only a short distance away. If you want to drive just a bit further you’ll make it to Movieland.
From Lake to River
At the southernmost point of Lake Garda, Peschiera serves as the guardian of the headwaters of Mincio River. There are lovely views of mountains, the lake, and river to enjoy whether you’re out for a stroll, a boat ride, or just making your way to the next stop.
Trip to Verona
Bus and train alike offer a quick and scenic journey to Verona, Italy. From either station it’s about a 10-minute walk to the city centre. Like Peschiera del Garda, Verona is a beautiful city with rich history and culture.
Riva Del Garda
Opposite Peschiera on the northern end of Lake Garda is the town Riva del Garda. You can go by bus or boat to visit this town nestled in the Italian Alps. If you decide to go by bus you will travel around the east side of the lake, passing through Garda, Malcesine, and Torbole. Expect the trip to take an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic, and be prepared to meet lots of people. The buses can get crowded and the stop is a little further from the city centre.
Exploring the Town
Just a short walk can provide much to see and do in Peshiera. A leisurely stroll can provide views of ancient architecture, modern art, parks, and restaurants.
Porta Varona
The Porta Verona was designed by Sanmicheli, the pupil of Palladio. It’s one of the two entrances to the heart of the old city. Although grand, the gates are narrow and traffic jams are common during the busy season, so plan accordingly.
Bridge
Close to the Porta Verona there is a bridge across the moat that allowed troops to move quickly from one end of the fortress to the other. Now it rests peacefully over the calm waters, keeping watch over moored vessels.
Fortezza (Fortress of Peschiera)
Peschiera has a long history of strategic importance for the defense of the Lago di Garda region, reaching back to the Roman Empire when the first fortress was built. Many archetects contributed to the walls surrounding the fortified town, each offering their own styles. The old town centre lies in the middle of the large fortress in the shape of a five-point star, surrounded by water. Despite Peshiera’s militant past, the old fortress now bustles with life and commerce. Shops, restaurants, and modern hotels are now cradled within the walls. In August, you can find boats in fortress’s moat competing in the Palio delle Mura.
Roman Excavations
Don’t miss the excavation site next to the church of San Martino, revealing artifacts from the ancient Roman period. Some of the earliest houses and a pre-Christian sacral object serve as remnants from this historic town’s youth.
Chiesa de San Martina
The church of San Martino is one of the oldest churches in the Verona diocese, with the first mention found of it found in documents from the 11th century. In the 15th century it underwent extensive renovations, eventually being demolished and rebuilt in 1822.
