Pilgrim’s Rest Things to Do
Pilgrim’s rest is a small town in South Africa that has been designated as a provincial heritage site. Though it has a history rooted in gold prospecting, today Pilgrim’s Rest is mainly a tourist destination with many things to do.
Museums
There are several museums in Pilgrim’s Rest covering different parts of the region’s past. The Central Garage is exactly what its name sounds like–the town garage of Pilgrim’s Rest. It now serves as a transportation museum that features antique cars and trucks, as well as horse-drawn wagons and carriages. Although its collection isn’t huge, it’s of high quality.
The House Museum is a well-preserved Victorian-era home that is open to the public. The rooms that you can tour include a living room, dining room, bedroom, and kitchen, all of which contain period furniture and decorations. It is open every day and the admission fee is small.
The “Our Golden Heritage Museum” covers the history of gold in the area. It is estimated that millions of dollar’s worth in gold was mined during the first seven years of mining in the Pilgrim’s Rest valley, and this museum preserves that heritage.
Upper and Lower Pilgrim’s Rest
If you’re a first-time visitor, you may be a little confused by the fact that Pilgrim’s Rest is split into two sections. The upper town has a more developed tourist infrastructure, such as the Royal Hotel and the museum, though the lower town possesses a charm all its own. Visitors often love the fact that the lower town has a lot of historic paraphernalia on display along the main street.
Markets
There are different types of markets in Pilgrim’s Rest for visitors to explore. On the main road through Pilgrim’s Rest you will find an extensive art market with many products created by native designers. There are also places to buy fresh, local produce. If you’re worried about money, Pilgrim’s Rest also has a bank and an ATM.
