Sai Kung Things to Do
Coming to Sai Kung, Hong Kong, gives you a new perspective of the world and a chance to enjoy fewer crowds than that of the main city. While it may not be the trendiest place, the things to do in Sai Kung give you a chance to develop a more well-rounded view of the former British colony in China.
Fish Boat Market
This place is known for their seafood, as you can find everything from huge crabs to octopus to prawns. Along the pier, you’ll find a flurry of activity and a cacophony of sounds with fishermen selling their seafood straight from their boats and cleaning fish for those who buy. You’ll see back-and-forth haggling, and then baskets changing hands once everyone decides on a price. Afterwards, you can grab cheese lobster or a variety of other foods fresh from the waters in one of the many restaurants in Sai Kung.
While tourists do tend to drive the prices up a little, you can learn more about how the seafood is prepared and how delicious fresh catches can be. And most of the time, you’ll get to pick the seafood you want—right from the aquarium. For dessert, try the thong sui, which is a type of custard; or a durian pancake, made from one of the most controversial (and smelly) fruits. Places like Moon Kei in the market serve these delicacies and more.
Swimming and Scuba Diving
Take a boat ride off the shore to find what’s below the surface of the water. Scuba among the coral, and see if you can find interesting sea life of your own before you head back to the infamous market. It should be easy enough to find a place within the village for you to rent the equipment and find a captain. If you want to do something a little more unstructured, then take a dip in Half Moon Bay or Clear Water Bay. Both of these beautiful spots are recommended as good places to catch a few waves and soak up a little sun.
