Things To Do in Spiez, Switzerland

Spiez Things to Do

Nestled between the conical peak of Niesen and the shores of Lake Thun, Spiez sits on a promontory jutting out into the lake. A storybook Swiss village surrounded by gardens, vineyards and forests, Spiez has a laid back vibe with activities for all seasons.

Castle Spiez

As you approach Spiez, the first thing you see is the large castle looming over the village.

The medieval structure with a huge tower is located on a hill right by the lake. Together with the old church and the lovely grounds it builds a picturesque frame for photographers. The oldest parts of the inner tower date from the 10th century, but what you see today was added from 14th to 18th centuries. Nowadays it houses a wonderful museum, presenting magnificent interior from medieval through to Baroque times. It is open from Easter to end of October daily. Don’t miss the excellent stucco works by artists from Ticino in 1614 and a climb up the tower from where you can enjoy stunning views across the lake. Allow some time to walk in the garden which is well maintained and nice sitting areas with great vistas of the lake and mountains.  NOTE: The castle is not wheelchair accessible.

Thun Lake

The crystal clear water of the lake beckons to those who love the outdoors. Swimming, sailing, windsurfing and wakeboarding are just some of the many activities available from spring through autumn. For the more adventurous, take a half day trip to the St. Beatus Caves, where legend says was the home of dragons 2000 years ago. Even if you don’t believe in dragons it’s a great selection of  lakes, stalagmites, stalactites and waterfalls. You must take the tour with a group and it takes just over an hour.

Spiez is a 40 minute cruise from Interlaken and a great alternative in the winter to the crowds in the resort city. After a day of skiing, kickback over a glass of locally produced and bottled wine as the sunsets over the lake.
