Machairas Monastery

A historic monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary is located about 40 kms from Nicosia. The interior of the church is decorated with religious icons, chandeliers, stone floors and wall frescoes. Currently there are 20 to 30 orthodox monks living there.

Churches

In the centre of the village of Palaichori there is the beautiful 16th century church of Chrysopantanassa (Acsension of Our Lady). Inside are unique wall paintings from the 2nd half of the 16th century. The church has been restored and presents a characteristic sample of Cypriot cultural influence.

The Church of Metamorphosis of Soteros is on the summit of the slopes. A cultural jewel, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nelion Winery

At Nelion Winery, founded in 1998, small groups of visitors can find out more about the process of wine making and view artifacts that have been handed down through generations of local wine makers.

Open from 10 am until 7 pm in the summer months, the place is nearly always busy with visitors, most of whom have made the pleasant drive up from Paphos or Limassol to stock up on a few bottles or cases of Nelion wines.

Kakopetria’s Old Village by Night

Lit only by the street’s lamp posts, the ancient, traditional stone-buildings and narrow cobblestone street of the old village of Kakopetria emanate a mysterious aura. It feels like walking through a fairy tale where everything’s been sprinkled with gold dust.

Foini Village

This little village is nestled amidst green and fragrant pine trees in the heart of the Troodos mountains. Foini is a picturesque village renowned for its pottery, the manufacture of traditional furniture – mainly Cypriot chairs – and for the local “loukoumi” a product like turkish delight.
