Windhoek Things To Do
The capital and largest city of Namibia, Windhoek, is a unique city with culture still developing. Look for museums and local plant life. It’s also a great place to explore via walking around, and Windhoek makes the perfect day trip from anywhere in Namibia.
See It On Foot
Start with a walk down Independence Avenue and a look in many of the local shops. Head for the Post Street pedestrian mall. Admire the unique piece of art that has been crafted from piece of the Gibeon meteorite shower and turned into several water fountains. The meteor was the largest to hit the earth. For more shopping, there’s also Wernhill Park Mall. Walk up the short, but steep, hill to see the area around Robert Mugabe Avenue, which is home to the Namibian parliament. It’s surrounded by a garden filled with native plants and makes a popular local place for a picnic. The Alte Feste or Old Fort is right nearby. It was built by the Germans and houses a local history museum. On a hot day, this makes the perfect place to grab a cold beer at the cafe.
The National Museum of Namibia
As the nation’s capital, Windhoek is home to many important national institutions. The museum maintains an emphasis on the history of the country’s struggle for independence from Germany. Many locals were imprisoned and treated poorly during colonial times, facts highlighted via many exhibits here. In addition, you will also see a display that includes a copy of the constitution, the original flag, the words of the national anthem and coat of arms. Another worthy place in the area is the Owela Museum. It’s part of the national museum and devoted to life as it was before the German settlers came. The focus is on natural and cultural history designed to allow visitors to understand the culture of the first peoples in the region.
