Atlantic City Warnings and Dangers
Atlantic City is a popular resort city and tourist destination located in New Jersey, United States. While popularly known for its casinos, beaches, and boardwalks, there are warnings and dangers that visitors should be aware of.
One thing that all visitors to Atlantic City should be aware of are the famous boardwalk birds. Seagulls are just about everywhere and fly really low, practically just above the heads of visitors. They will follow you if they see that you have food, and if any food drops onto the boardwalk, they will swoop down and pick it up. It’s not uncommon to see these birds fighting for food in the air. It’s best to avoid standing directly under the birds to avoid getting any surprises on your clothing.
The pigeons that used to prowl the boardwalk looking to be fed have been supplanted by these seagulls. Seagulls are more aggressive than pigeons and also are better flyers, so they can circle overhead and grab stuff from your hand. This is something all guests should be aware of to avoid being taken by surprise.
The term undesirables covers a vast array of groups ranging from people who have spent too much time drinking to aggressive beggars and ladies of ill repute. Families in the area may want to check their maps to find destinations that steer clear of some of the less savory parts of town. Some of the homeless tend to be very aggressive. While most will not bother you and turn away if you say no to their requests, there are a few out there that will try a little harder to get your change. You will also want to be very careful if you decide to venture off and do some shopping in the Outlet Walk. Along with a large population of homeless people, there is also a population of drug users and sex workers.

While most time spent at the local casinos can make for an enjoyable day, you might want to check the reputation of those you visit beforehand. In some cashes, you may be returned marked dollars, which can indicte the money did not come from legal sources. Outside some casinos, you might find some people loitering that you would typically want to avoid, ranging again from sex workers to drug users. Finally, you’ll want to secure yourself even in the casinos. Make sure your belongings are securely on your person and don’t set your items loosely onto tables. You’re likely to find your items missing if you do so.
Boardwalk between Bally’s and Resorts
Beware the streets and boardwalk after dark. Even in front of the casinos the streets can be dangerously full of dealers, hookers, pimps, beggars, thieves and others. Do not pass the closed down Sands casino on your way to resorts and Showboat. Being aware of your surroundings is not enough here. Travel only by cab (the Jitney is pure misery) or just stay in the casinos past dark. Many of the casinos are connected by walkways, and these are safe. The whole city is a disgrace and ranges between extreme third world like poverty and extreme wealth.
Parking Garage Caution
When parking in a casino parking garage, find a parking spot near the elevator. Even if you wind up on the top level, do not settle for a spot that is more than a 5 second walk to the elevator. There are people who croutch behind cars and just wait for unsuspecting victims to attack in the parking garages, and steal everything they have, including their car. Always watch your surroundings, and dont park too far away.
Atlantic City is a fun and exciting place, but don’t go alone unless you’re meeting somewhere there. Always have a group to go with. Two is better than one. The more people you have, the safer you will be, and you will have a much better time.
