Austria Warnings and Dangers
Keep in mind the cold snowy winters in this land of the Alps.
Food and Drink
Restaurant bills are calculated slightly differently. You will be charged if you get more than drink at the soda fountain. You will also be changed for the bread they place on your table by the slice before they bring in the rest of your meal.
Skiing in the Alps is one of the great pleasures of Austria. However, it has many dangers. The fall of heavy snow in the local language is known as dachlawinen. This refers to the act of heavy snow falling from any surface including mountains, tall buildings even local houses. Keep an eye out when you’re near any overhang. Consider renting rather than buying your ski equipment. This way you’ll get access to the latest equipment at less coast. Exercise proper safety precautions as many mountains are steep. Climbing glaciers is a problem in this area as you may get hurt if you not are very careful and don’t watch your step.
Driving in Austria is an ideal way to get around. If you rent a car here, make sure you have snow tires even late in spring. Even if you are driving in the major cities, the roads may not always be cleared all the time. If you’re in the mountains, roads can get slippery very quickly. Make sure your brakes are a good working shape. Be particularly careful in the mountains as the roads are not always well paved.
