Funchal Tourist Traps
Seated on the archipelago of Madeira is the Portuguese city of Funchal. It is the leading port for cruise liner dockings, but tourists should keep in mind a few of the tourist traps in the region.
Local Sellers
A significant inconvenience for some people visiting Funchal are the many touts in the region. Touts are individuals who attempt to get you to buy from their store or restaurant. There are quite a few in the old town of Funchal, where numerous restaurants are constantly trying to attract your business. These touts are harmless, but they can be aggressive at times.
Meanwhile, there are scammers in the markets who will try to overcharge you. This especially happens when trying to buy food that is charged by the pound. Although most store owners are friendly, a few will try to cheat you. Be sure you confirm the price and have your food properly measured.
Unbelievable Hotels
The local hotels try to drive business toward the local beaches. In order to do so, they sometimes exaggerate the beauty of those beaches. The hotel Faja dos Padres has been accused of this, as have a few others. It’s best to investigate the beaches yourself before taking your family, particularly kids, to the nearby shores. There can even be slightly dangerous conditions, with lots of debris, in the area.
