Bolivia Warnings and Dangers
Bolivia is pretty safe. Just pay attention and follow these tips to avoid trouble.
Altitude Sickness
The very high altitude makes ordinary activities more difficult. Just walking down the hallway in the hotel can be exhausting if you’re not used to it.
To lessen the symptoms, drink plenty of water, add some re-hydration fluid to your water, walk slowly, stop and sit regularly, and take in the views. Enjoy the experience. You could also try some local coca tea, but be forewarned, its taste is acquired.
Taxi Safety
The safest way to move by car at night is taking a Radio Taxi. The difference between Radio Taxis and regular taxis is that Radio Taxis have a sign advertising their business and phone number on the roof, whereas other taxis do not have any of that information. Avoid taxis with no signage. People have been mugged by fake taxi drivers.
Kidnapping
Do not get into any of the buses or van without making sure people in them are tourist and locals, particularly if you are women traveling alone or in a small group. There has been a gang kidnapping women traveling along or together. They would pretend they are taxi drivers and pick up women tourists. When the woman gets in, there is a couple of Bolivian women or men pretending to be passengers. They are part of the group.
If u see a woman or two in a bus or van with a couple and no other people, write down the license plate – if there is one – or warn them not to get in.
