Curacao Warnings and Dangers
Curacao is a beautiful destination, but there are always things you should take heed of when you are traveling somewhere new. These warnings and dangers will help to ensure that your trip to Curacao is amazing.
When swimming, make sure to follow the sandy areas when swimming. It is easy to accidentally crush corals and disturb other animals. Don’t touch, rest on, kick, or hang onto the corals. These are living animals that are damaged even by gentle handling. Also, spearfishing is prohibited. As with any body of water, there is also risk of drowning and injury when there are no lifeguards around.
If you are going to stay on Curacao, make sure you research where your hotel is in relation to the oil refineries. The stench can be awful. If you do not want to stay near an oil refinery, take a look at the map or read hotel reviews before you actually make a booking for a room.
Areas to Avoid
It is recommended to stick to the main streets after dark. The back streets of Punda are especially sketchy after 8 p.m. As always, ensure that you are not walking around aimlessly after dark, and always try to appear confident when you are walking around. Avoid taking out a map or staring at your phone while you are walking around. This could make you a target for scam artists or pickpockets looking for tourists.
Curacao is a unique destination with a lot to offer. Make the most of your time by staying safe and aware of your surroundings.
